As you begin to brainstorm your new business and narrow down what you want to focus on, it might be a good idea to brainstorm with friends and family and hear their ideas about your strengths, the strengths of your idea, and the conceptual process of your product. Now, in taking the feedback of friends and family, you have to consider the source. If you have less than supportive people around you, maybe those are not the ones to brainstorm with or ask for feedback from. However, if you have other creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial people around you, friends and family are a great source of inspiration and new directions.

Once you’ve developed a product idea and some prototypes or examples, take them to your friends and family and see what they think.

    Some great questions to ask:

    • Who do you think would buy this?

    • Who would they be buying it for?

    • Where do you think they would be looking for this item?

    • How often or for what occasion do you think they would be buying it?

    • What would you call this item/How would you describe it (you may even want to write down some of these terms as these could be helpful when you go to write your Etsy titles and descriptions)

    • Would you buy this item online?

    • What would you pay for this item?

    • How could this item be improved?

    • What is your favorite aspect of the item?

In answering these questions, you can help to Identify your Target Customer, perhaps pinpoint some roadblocks to selling your new product, and hear other peoples’ honest opinions of positive and negative aspects of your product. This can be invaluable as you proceed forward in setting up your Etsy shop, and can help you to launch your store with the best possible product that you can create (for now).
