    Hey guys! Welcome to Etsy Blitz Week Day #4.

    I can’t believe this week is almost over already! It has, like all good things, flown by and I have had a great time teaching these lessons. I hope you’ve seen a lot of value, and I can’t wait to dive into today’s lesson.

    Alright, today we are going to dive right in to another one of the things that I get told holds people back a lot from getting started on Etsy.

    Do you know what that is? You might, if you are here, because I told you yesterday what we were going to talk about today, but it is TIME. When I ask the question to my students, what is the number one thing that holds you back, I get told regularly that they haven’t started yet because they just can’t find the time.

    Now, I want to address this from two angles. The first one, is a mindset angle and the second one is an actual time shortage practically angle.

    We’re going to start with the mindset angle. If you were here yesterday, you heard me talk about setting big scary goals and then having to overcome your obstacle thoughts in order to allow yourself to chase after those goals without being terrified of failure.

    I’m going to give you a little more tough love here. And I don’t really like giving tough love, but I think this needs to said. Really, REALLY often, we make an excuse that we don’t have time for something because we are afraid of doing it, or because we are allowing ourselves to believe that time is the thing that is holding us back when it is really the mindset of fear.  

    We tell ourselves that we are too busy, or that we have too much going on, or we’ll get to it when things die down and get a little simpler, or our families need us, and we just can’t bear to take the time away from them to chase this dream.

    Now, all those things probably are true. You are busy. And you do have a lot going. And of course it would be nice to have a time in our lives where all that busyness dies down and we can just focus on one thing at a time, although I don’t really think that time is ever going to exist.

    And your family DOES need you.

    But YOU need you too. And you need to allow yourself to chase the goals that you have, and prioritize the dreams that you have for yourself outside of all those things.

    I’m not telling you that you are not busy. And certainly, some of us are busier than others. What I’m saying though, is that we prioritize and make time for the things that are important to us.

    If starting an Etsy shop is important to you, or if gaining that business traction and bringing in that income is something that you want for yourself, you have to make time for it. Likely there is never going to be this magical moment in your life where you have NOTHING going on, and you just have an overabundance of free time. Particularly if you are a parent, have a job, or function as an adult in life. There are ALWAYS going to be things that are demanding of your time.

    You have to figure out how to work within the confines of those things and still pursue the goals that you have for yourself.

    So how we do that?

    The second part of this issue of time is the issue of the actual time. While I do think that the mindset aspect of it is a huge portion of what holds people back or what makes them think they are too busy, there is actually a part of it that really does involve having a lack of time.

    We are all really busy. And there are real things, like jobs, and kids, and adulting, that take up your time and limit your ability to just mess around with an Etsy shop all day.

    So how do we work around that?

    A large part of it is getting as focused and organized as possible. When you are limited on the actual time that you have to dedicate to getting this business set up and launched and running, you do not want to be spinning your wheels, working on things really slowly, trying to figure everything out yourself and reinvent the wheel, or working on things that aren’t really going to be making a difference in your business in the long run.

    You need to have a plan for what building your business looks like and the steps that you need to take to get there, so that every time you sit down at the computer to do some work, you’re actually accomplishing things that are important and need to be done for the success of your shop.

    So back to time management. One of my favorite ways to make sure that I’m utilizing my time well, is to use the website Trello. It’s a free website that allows you to make lists that you can save like a virtual bulletin board. I use for to do lists. Basically, when I sit down at my computer, I already have a running list of things that need to get done to move the needle forward on my shop and my business. With that, I’m able to be really focused when I’m at my computer, and not fall into the trap of a social media timesuck or a blogging black hole.

    It also allows me to brain dump all the things that I need to do, so I don’t have to keep track of things that pop into my mind and then I forget about them like 10 minutes later, because I can make myself a little card and put it on my to do list on Trello, and it’s there for me to check off when I’m done.

    I also throw out that one of the best ways to accomplish more in less time is through batching your work. Batching is basically just the idea of arranging all your tasks so that you can do the ones that are most alike at the same time, and then move on to the next group that is most alike. For example, in my business I batch my social media posts. It is easier for me, both time wise and mental energy wise, to do all my social media posts in a row than it is to be doing one post per day and then the next day think of new content and go through the whole process again.

    Likewise, when I work in and on my Etsy shop, I batch my work together. I batch listings, I batch photography for new collections, and I batch the actual orders - where I work on all the pink items at the same time, then all the navy items, then all the grey items, etc.

    Not only does this save time, it also helps me to be significantly more organized and to accomplish way more than I would if I was jumping between different tasks constantly.

    Because I am batching things together, I have time that I am super focused and accomplish quite a bit, and I’m also better about holding myself to a standard of dividing up my time and moving onto the next task. I’m pretty type A, so I like to set an expectation for myself of how I’m going to use my time each day, and batching things together helps me to keep focused and keep on track for what I need to get done. If I know that I only have an hour to get all my listings created and published, I’m more likely to stay on task and work through things as quickly as i can, rather than getting distracted or going down internet rabbit holes of other things that need to get done.


    I hope this has been helpful! Time management is something that a lot of us struggle with, and something that I think is an ongoing process of how to best approach. I certainly don’t have all the answers, and there are lots of times that I am still not as productive as I would like, however this process has helped me a LOT in being more focused and organized throughout my day. Remember, there is not ever going to be that mythical time when you are able to dedicate yourself completely to one task. You have to make sure you are making time to chase after the things you want from your life and the goals you set for yourself.
